Molds can be found nearly anywhere and can grow on almost any substance. Basics:

  • Molds produce tiny spores in order to reproduce.
  • Mold spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually.  When a mold spore lands on a damp spot indoors, they may begin to grow.  During growth cycles, molds digest whatever surface they are growing on.  Elevated levels of relative humidity in the air can also be a source of moisture in order to fuel mold amplification.
  • There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.  When excessive moisture or water accumulates indoors, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or un-addressed.
  • Water is the cause of mold.  Mold is the result of water.  There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment.  The only way to control indoor mold growth is to control the moisture source for the mold.
